For years, we have been told that physical mail is dying. Looking at our own lives, that seems obvious. We send messages through chat apps, sign documents electronically, and receive bills by email. It feels as though the mailbox has become little more than a place for advertisements and the occasional package.

But while building tools around physical mail, we kept finding the same thing in different places: many of society's most important interactions still depend on a physical address. People write letters to loved ones in prison. Citizens contact elected representatives by mail. Courts, government agencies, insurers, lawyers, hospitals, and businesses still send documents where permanence, formality, identity, or an original signature matters.

The network is not the outdated part

The postal system is not an outdated relic that survived by accident. It is one of the world's largest pieces of public infrastructure. The Universal Postal Union says the international postal network served 7.3 billion people in 2024; its 2025 sector report describes more than 679,000 post offices and 4.6 million employees worldwide. The UPU's statistical database covers more than 200 countries and territories.

In the United States alone, USPS says it processed and delivered an average of 361.1 million mailpieces per day in 2025, while serving 170.4 million delivery points. That is not nostalgia. That is infrastructure operating at a scale that most digital products never have to touch.

Software removed friction everywhere except the letter

What has become outdated is not the network itself. It is the experience of using it. Sending a letter in 2026 can still mean finding a printer, buying paper, locating an envelope, purchasing stamps, searching for the correct address, and finding a mailbox. None of those steps are the reason someone wants to write a letter. They are obstacles around the actual message.

Over the last two decades, software removed friction from almost every other part of daily life. We order taxis without calling a dispatcher, buy groceries without visiting a supermarket, and manage finances without stepping into a bank. Yet sending a physical letter often still feels like a process from another era.

Physical mail does not compete with digital communication

A letter is not an alternative to a messaging app any more than a signed contract is an alternative to a text message. Different forms of communication solve different problems. Some conversations benefit from speed. Others require permanence, formality, authenticity, legal weight, or simply the reassurance that comes from holding something tangible.

That is the problem we are built around. We are not trying to replace the postal service, and we do not believe every conversation should happen through physical mail. But when a real letter is the right tool, sending one should feel as effortless as sending an email. You write the message; software handles formatting, printing, addressing, postage, and delivery.

Our tools for sending letters to prisoners, representatives, offices, and personal contacts looked separate at first. They are not. They are all part of the same idea: rebuild the experience of using the postal network for the internet age.

The point

The internet still depends on the post

Software can make sending a letter feel digital, but the final mile is still physical. A message becomes useful because a postal worker can bring it to a prison mailroom, a representative's office, a courthouse, a government desk, or a home address.

That is the real lesson: the internet did not make the postal network irrelevant. It made the old interface to that network feel unnecessarily hard. Our job is to remove the friction while respecting the infrastructure underneath it.
